Legendary: The Box is a first-person shooter in which you'll assume the role of a thief who, at the game's outset, unwittingly opens Pandora's Box inside a New York museum and unleashes all manner of monsters on the world. It's been about four months since we last saw Legendary: The Box in action, and at that point we were treated to demos of the game's first level and another set inside a cathedral. Our recent meeting with Spark Unlimited was long overdue but well worth the wait because we were afforded an opportunity to play through a pretty substantial demo.

Set in an as-yet unnamed small English city that has clearly seen better days, the demo tasked us with fighting our way through cobbled streets toward a cathedral that may or may not be the same one we saw the interior of at E3 earlier this year. For much for the demo we were accompanied by a small number of artificial-intelligence-controlled squadmates, but we weren't able to influence their actions in any way. To be perfectly honest, their most important role seemed to be dying in front of us in a variety of occasionally entertaining ways.

Werewolves will attack just about anything that moves in Legendary: The Box.

For the most part, our colleagues were being killed by the same werewolves that we saw at E3, and they attack both unpredictably and quickly. When they're not busy tearing your colleagues and members of the evil Black Order to shreds, Legendary's werewolves like to run around and scale walls, which can make them tough targets to keep in your sights. In addition to the garden-variety werewolves that we were up against, the demo featured a number of the more powerful alpha werewolves. The alphas are colored slightly differently and are larger than the regular werewolves, and they like to position themselves atop buildings and such and then throw chunks of destroyed walls and other debris at you. All of the werewolves can resurrect themselves if their heads are still intact, so decapitation is mandatory.

Our arsenal, although small compared to that which you'll have access to in the finished game, was thankfully more than adequate for the task at hand, and there was no shortage of discarded weapons and ammo to pick up as we progressed through the demo. Our weapons included a submachine gun, which sacrifices accuracy in order to spray bullets all over the place; a shotgun, which is super-effective up close but not very useful at range; and an assault rifle, which represents something of a happy medium between the aforementioned guns and comes equipped with a scope. We also had access to frag grenades and Molotov ~censored~, the latter of which did a great job of setting fire to enemies and environmental objects alike. If you've checked out our previous coverage of Legendary: The Box, you'll know that the protagonist also has the ability to siphon health from fallen enemies using a strange symbol that was burned onto his hand when he touched Pandora's Box. We can now confirm that you're able to siphon health into a reserve as well as into your health bar, which, for example, gives you the option to heal yourself in the middle of a boss battle when there are no corpses around.

Although not a boss battle per se, we had an opportunity to play through such a battle when we encountered our first minotaur. When we encountered said anthropomorphic bovine, it was already doing battle with a handful of Black Order soldiers, but they didn't last long enough against the beast to do any real damage before its attention turned to us. The battle that ensued took place in a small courtyard that might as well have been a gladiatorial arena, given that there was no way for us to escape and that the area seemed purpose-built for the encounter. The minotaur--which will be one of many in the game, we're told--was a very different prospect than the werewolves that we'd been battling previously; it moved relatively slowly, but its attacks were much more powerful, and for the first portion of the encounter it was wielding a Celtic-cross-style gravestone as a club. After throwing the gravestone at us, the minotaur's resorted to charging at us like a bull, and every time we avoided it a wall behind us would take the hit and be visibly damaged. Incidentally, we're told that the minotaur doesn't take any damage when it crashes into walls, so don't expect to beat it just by playing matador.

Playing matador won't do you much good against the minotaur.

The last encounter of the demo pitted us against a large wormlike creature that rose up through the ground and pulled a number of Black Order soldiers down into its hole as we looked on. The worm managed to grab us as well at one point, but we were still able to shoot at it and, thankfully, it released its grip on us shortly before it died. After that, we were rewarded with the obligatory "thanks for playing" screen.

Black & White 2 is a video game developed by Lionhead Studios and published by Electronic Arts. It blends real-time strategy, city building and god game elements. The player (the last god) is called to the world from a "pure prayer" and thus comes upon a scene of a Greek city being devastated by a huge Aztec army. After the player saves a certain amount of people, their people are transported to a new land with a handful of refugee worshippers, the player must re-establish a power base from which to eventually defeat the Aztec empire. To do so, the player must conquer the Norse, the Japanese and the Aztecs, by peace, or war.

Throughout the game there is a theme of "The prophecy" which states that a tribe will be destroyed by the mightiest power in the world but will receive a god who will lead them to glory and dominance of the world.

The only way the player can interact with this world directly is through the player's hand, with which the player can pick up people, trees, food, and influence the ground. The player can also cast miracles. However, a certain amount of "Mana" (in essence, "Prayer Power") from the player's believers is needed to do this.

One of the game's most innovative features is that its user interface is almost buttonless. The HUD (Heads-Up Display) is much simpler than other such "creator" games, such as The Sims and Rollercoaster Tycoon, and the player sees little else on the screen but the world, the player's hand, and toolbars which the player can make disappear. To do things such as cast miracles, the player moves the hand in such a way to make a symbol on the ground, which is called a gesture. This activates the miracle, and if the player has enough mana, it appears in the player's hand ready to cast. Miracles have a variety of different uses. There are 6 ordinary miracles: fire, lightning, water, shield, heal, and meteor, (each of which can be thrown or poured), and 4 epic wonders, which are hurricane, siren, earthquake, and volcano.

The player's creature can do most things the player can do, such as cast miracles. They will grow slowly for a long time, and can become very large. Since the player trains him, his personality can become whatever the player makes of it. They may be an aide in supporting the player's kingdom or the ultimate soldier in the player's army.

There are three possible paths to take in this game: Good, Evil, or a more neutral combination of the two; although this decision is not discrete. The typical path of an evil god will be one of fear, torture, conquest and destruction using epic armies and building fearsome places, such as a pit of torture, while that of a good god will be one of benevolence, more positive city building, and lots of looking after the populace, particularly defending it from attack. Both of these require ore and wood, of which there is a limited amount (though some maps have bottomless mines and water miracles can turn a single tree into a forest used correctly), making players choose a strategy - but there is plenty of slack in each.

The game features Norse, Aztec, Japanese, and Greek tribes. The player's tribe is the Greeks.

DescriptionManhunt is perhaps the most violent, amoral video game ever made, and it's entirely unapologetic about it. Produced by the same team that created Grand Theft Auto, it sees you cast as a death-row inmate reprieved from the chair to take part in a sick game run by a snuff-movie producer.

You're forced to sneak around a series of maze-like levels killing "hunters" and SWAT-team members as you go, using such unsavoury methods as suffocating them with plastic bags and cutting their throats with shards of glass. This is primarily a stealth-based title, using many of the same techniques as Metal Gear Solid--you shuffle around walls, peer round corners and use noise to attract and distract the enemy.

This aspect of the game works extremely well thanks to the superb graphics and sound. These create an intense level of tension, so that when you mistakenly knock into an abandoned shopping trolley and alert a hunter, it's really quite terrifying. The combat, just as in GTA, is handled rather less well--but it's not anywhere bad enough to ruin the whole game.

The story revolves around a man on Death Row named James Earl Cash, sentenced to death by lethal injection due to a grievous crime, the nature of which is never explained. An exceedingly wealthy former Hollywood director named Starkweather, who runs a seedy community in an impoverished town named Carcer City, bribes the doctors to inject Cash with a powerful sedative instead.

The Director, as he likes to call himself, creates and distributes snuff films through a company named Valiant Video Enterprises. He sets up Cash as his latest star using the corrupt Carcer City police force, as well as his personal "Cerberus" guards, to corral Cash into butchering Carcer's local gangs on camera to make violent, visceral, underground snuff films.

It's almost hard to believe in this day and age of movie and game tie-ins, but other than a couple of handheld games, the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie didn't have a companion game on consoles. Disney Interactive Studios is making up for lost time with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which features plotlines from both the second and third Pirates movies. While the game does a solid job of capturing the look and humor of the movies, it fails to emulate the films' action sequences very well. The combat is extremely simple, and you'll grow tired of mashing on the attack button well before you reach the end of the game.

There aren't any PC rally racing games that are better than Colin McRae Rally 04--and there aren't many better driving games of any type, for that matter.

Earlier this year, Codemasters brought its most recent entry in the highly praised Colin McRae Rally racing series, Colin McRae Rally 04, to the US with apparent exclusivity on the Xbox. Initially, the game had been released on the Xbox, PS2, and PC in Europe, but for the game's North American retail release, Codemasters decided (for some reason) to just bring the Xbox version out. However, crafty PC driving fans with the gumption to investigate Codemasters' Web site soon learned that the PC version of the game could be acquired in North America--albeit exclusively through the Codemasters site and for a price that was more than twice the cost of the Xbox version's budget price tag. For what it's worth, however, the fact that the Xbox version of the game is as cheap as it is still remains something of an unexplained anomaly. Aside from this, though, the PC version's equally excellent driving gameplay, better graphics, and added, competitive online mode make the game every bit worth purchasing.

[XBOX] Gun Valkyrie

GUNVALKYRIE, from Sega is a beautiful game, set in a fantastic electric-punk alternative 1800's world. The graphics are astonishingly beautiful, the action is fast and frenetic, and the missions are reasonably varied, and fun.

All this comes at a price, however.

In an effort to fully utilize the xbox's controller, Smilebit has come up with a control scheme that is as versatile as it is difficult to learn. While you'll be giggling with unabashed glee as you leap into the air, jump over an enemy, blast it to pieces, cartwheel to the side, turn to the left, and fill a handful of aliens full of lead (or whatever it is your gun shoots), all in the span of maybe half a second, and all in one fluid motion, it's not easy to get to the point where you're that familiar with the controls.

In essence, the left analog stick controls your body, and the right analog stick controls the direction your arms (and thus, gun) face. Left trigger jumps, right trigger shoots, face buttons switch weapons. But it's way more complex than that, because of the analog stick clicks, which add a whole new world of complexity to the controls. Click on the left stick and move, and you'll "boost dash", either forward, to the side, or backwards. Click on the left stick, and you'll change facing, in 90 degree increments, depending on which direction the stick's pointed in.

So, while you'll be able to execute that jump-dash forward-shoot-cartwheel-turn-shoot move, it'll require you to left trigger/left stick click forward/right trigger/left stick click right/right click stick left, all in sequence. Rewarding, but again, difficult.

Once you've invested the time, though, GV's an incredible experience. You'll start on the ground, running from the bugs, but by the end of the game, your feet won't even ever touch the ground.

black Isle’s original Fallout RPG is a bona fide classic, and the post-apocalyptic gameworld used for that game series is one that’s sorely missed by plenty of gamers. While some of them would prefer another straight up RPG set in that world, most will be content with Brotherhood of Steel, a co-operative beat ‘em up action RPG that bears more than a passing resemblance to the fan favorite fantasy game Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance.

Fallout: BOS uses the same game engine as Dark Alliance, so fans know they’re getting sharp graphics, an isometric action perspective, and an easy to use inventory. Instead of kobolds and giants, Fallout pits your characters against mutated ghouls, giant bugs, mice of extraordinary size, and much worse, all set against the backdrop of nuclear devastated cities and wastelands. The goal of the game is to find the Brotherhood of Steel, self appointed guardians of the wastes.

Prostitutes, two headed cattle, and regular folks dish out quests that have you killing monsters and finding lost items in no time, and the combat is as cool and responsive as the environments are weird and refreshing after all the fantasy themed D&D-like games in the genre. You can use guns, lasers, and nasty melee weapons and, as always, you must loot the bodies of your foes for better weapons, ammo, and the credits you need to buy more weapons. Characters level up and gain new skills and abilities, to better face the challenges to come.

Unlike most action RPGs of this type Fallout BOS features branching conversations that alter some of the quests ahead. This makes the replay value higher than normal and makes the game feel all the more refreshing. Parents should note that this Fallout is similar to the earlier games in that the subject matter tends to be more "adult" but Fallout fans should also be warned that this isn’t the Fallout III they’re pining for. It’s satisfying enough as an action RPG, but that’s all it is.
